Bridging the Archipelago: The Golden Spike of the Manila-Legazpi Through Line

On May 8, 1938, the Philippines witnessed a monumental shift in its geographical and economic landscape. Quezon drove a symbolic golden spike into the rails near the Quilbay Bridge, officially inaugurating the Manila-Legazpi Through Line.

A Decades-Long Vision

The journey to this moment spanned decades of labor and engineering persistence. The inauguration took place approximately one kilometer south of Del Gallego and 100 meters north of the Quilbay Bridge. President Quezon used a ceremonial hammer—an exact replica of those used by the track layers—to drive the golden spike.

Today, a stone marker stands at this historic site. The monument bears a lasting inscription detailing the project's timeline, immortalizing the sweat and steel that went into connecting the two regions.
