A Surrender Born of Internal Strife: The Story of General Jose Ignacio Paua

On this day in 1900, one of the most unique figures of the Philippine Revolution—Brigadier General Jose Ignacio Paua—surrendered unconditionally to American forces in Albay.

Known as the only "pure-blooded" Chinese general in the revolutionary ranks, Paua was a trusted confidant of Emilio Aguinaldo and a legendary ammunition expert. However, the end of his military career was marked by controversy. Internal tensions between Paua and General Vito Belmarino, coupled with a near-miss assassination attempt during the Battle of Guinobatan, led a disillusioned Paua to seek safety in Polangui before finally surrendering.

His story serves as a poignant reminder of the internal fractures that challenged the resistance during the twilight of the Philippine-American War in the Bicol region.
